What Is Pilates?
German athlete Joseph Pilates developed the Pilates method in the early 1900’s. Borrowing from principles of yoga and calisthenics, the method centers attention on correct alignment, breathing, joint release and extending range of motion. The exercises, done on mats and specialized pieces of equipment, are designed to balance the muscles in the body, improve flexibility and promote physical and mental harmony. The exercises work every muscle in the body, though the focus is core control - strengthening the deep abdominal's and back muscles. Pilates was embraced early on by the dance community because the movements build strength without adding bulk or tightening the muscles. The method gained popularity as Hollywood actors and prominent athletes have praised its ability to create elongated, toned muscle and enhance sports performance. Pilates exercise is often recommended by physicians and physical therapists to aid in rehabilitation and injury prevention.
